Acne Vulgaris is an inflammatory disease of the skin; caused by changes in the skin structures consisting of a hair follicle and its associated gland. Acne lesions are commonly referred to as pimples, spots.
Exactly why some people get acne and some do not, we don’t know this fact yet. It is known to be partly hereditary. Several factors are known to be linked to acne:

  • Family history
  • Hormonal activity
  • Stress
  • Hyperactive sebaceous glands
  • Accumulation of dead skin cells
  • Bacteria in the pores
  • Use of anabolic steroids
  • Any medication containing halogens (iodides, chlorides, bromides)
  • Menopause-associated acne
  • High milk consumption, high carbohydrates, chocolate, french fries, potato chips and sugar among others, affect acne

We can prevent new acne breakouts with certain measures, such as:

  • Wash acne-prone areas only twice a day with a natural face wash
  • Use an acne cream and sebum control formulation to help dry excess oil
  • Avoid heavy foundation makeup
  • Remove makeup before going to bed
  • Wear loose fitting clothing
  • Shower after exercising or doing strenuous work
  • Using a cleansing diet to get rid of the impurities in digestive system
  • Clean skin everyday
  • Check your cosmetics, foods and other products to make sure you are not having a problem with allergies that can be mistaken for acne
  • Eat a high-fiber, low-fat diet
  • Drink plenty of water and other fluids like fresh juices etc
  • If you have small blackheads or pimples do not pop them. This can lead to even more skin problems
  • Avoid medications that contain iodides or bromides

Acne marks or scars are areas of fibrous tissue that replace normal skin (or other tissue) after any injury or pimple.

All the factors which promote Acne & Pimple, can promote Acne marks/scars as well because Acne & Pimples leaves their scars on skin.

The main preventive measures we can take are to minimize the factors which can cause Acne & Pimples, details of which are given under Acne & Pimples section.

Cellulite describes a condition that occurs in men and women where the skin of the lower limbs, abdomen, and pelvic region becomes dimpled.

Cellulite can be caused by:

  • Hormonal factors
  • Post pregnancy changes in abdominal area
  • Several genetic factors have been shown to be necessary for cellulite to develop. Gender, race, biotype a hormone receptor allele that determines the receptor number and sensitivity, distribution of subcutaneous fat, and predisposition to circulatory insufficiency have all been shown to contribute to cellulite.
  • Diet
  • Smoking, lack of exercise, tight clothes, high heeled shoes, and sitting or standing in a single position of long periods have all been correlated with an increase in cellulite. A high stress lifestyle will cause an increase in the catecholamine hormones.

The most beneficial way to avoid the Cellulite is to control lifestyle factors. Controlling stress and anxiety are of considerable benefit. Maintaining a healthy diet and exercising surely helps.

Freckles are flat, circular spots on the skin. The spots develop randomly on the skin, especially after repeated exposure to sunlight and particularly in persons of fair complexion. Freckles vary in color, they may be red, yellow, tan, light-brown, brown, or black but they are always darker than the skin around them since they are due to deposits of the dark pigment called melanin. Black spots are blemishes on the skin associated with ageing and exposure to ultra-violet radiation from the sun. They are also known as age spots or sun spots. They range in color from light brown to black and are located in areas most often exposed to the sun, particularly the hands, face, shoulders, arms and forehead.

Factors that promote Freckles & Black spots include:

  • Certain bacterial skin infections
  • Skin problems like, Eczema, Dermatitis, Psoriasis etc
  • Heredity

Anyone with a hereditary tendency to freckle should wear sunscreen whenever appropriate and also minimize their sun exposure.
